As much as I love ESPN they are barely talking about the Orange Bowl. This should be a game worth watching, after all its Tuesday night! What else do you have planned? Let’s break it down so we know what to watch for.
Iowa vs Georgia Tech
Iowa
The Good:
Iowa is a classic physical defensive Big 10 team. Supporters of Iowa Football will point to their September 26th win Vs Penn State. Iowa won that game on the road 21-10. That same Penn State team went on to win the Citrus Bowl Vs an LSU team that finished with a 9-3 record. LSU also plays in the SEC, the toughest division in college football.
The Bad:
November 14Th saw the Hawkeye’s travel to Ohio State. The Buckeye’s won that game 27-24. Again Iowa supporters will point out that Ohio State ended up winning the Rose Bowl, and they would be correct.
The Ugly:
November 7Th Northwestern rolled into town, leaving shortly after with a W. Northwestern finished the year with a dismal 6-4 record. Supporters of Iowa football will correctly point out that quarterback Ricky Stanzi was knocked out of the game in the second quarter. Iowa was winning that game 10-0 when Stanzi was hit causing a fumble for a touchdown.
Georgia Tech
The Good:
October 17th, then ranked #19 Georgia Tech played host to the #4 ranked Virginia Tech team. The Yellow Jackets won that game 28-23. Quarterback Josh Nesbitt and the GT option run offense ran all over the Hokies for 309 rushing yards and 4 Touchdowns. Nesbitt claiming 3 of them.
The Bad:
The Yellow Jackets arrived in Miami to play the Hurricanes as a 4 1/2 point favorite. The U sent them packing in a lopsided 33-17 route handing the Yellow Jackets their first loss on the season.
The Ugly:
As a 7.5 point favorite GT was upset by their in state rival Bull dogs on November 28th at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Georgia ran wild all over Tech’s defense for a total of 339 total yards. The Yellow Jackets also struggled on offense rushing for just 205 yards when rushing is usually the staple of this teams offense.
Questions to be answered tonight:
Can Georgia Tech get their run game going vs Iowa’s tough defense?
Can Iowa be productive enough on offense to keep this game interesting?
With all the coverage going towards Thursday’s National Title game let’s hope for a great Orange Bowl so the media feels guilty for ignoring this one.
