8 times a charm

It was announced today that Andre Dawson would be the sole player elected into the prestigious Baseball Hall of Fame for 2010. Any baseball fan knows that Dawson was a good player but lets take a look at just how good he was.

Dawson received the rookie of the year award in 1977, the first of many awards he would receive over his illustrious 20 year career. He was also named the leagues Most Valuable Player in 1987 while playing with the Cubs. The awards don’t stop there as The Hawk was an 8 time All Star, won 8 Gold Gloves and 4 Silver Slugger awards. A career .279 hitter Dawson stole 314 bases and hit 438 home run’s. This puts him in the elite company of Barry Bonds and Willie Mays as the only other players to hit over 400 home runs and steal 300+ bases.

With all those stats its amazing it took the writers so long to send him to Cooperstown. I’ve heard all the arguments but when a player calls it quits and we analyize the numbers after 5 years they don’t change. Either they were good enough to be in the Hall or not. Dawson was clearly good enough.

Welcome to Cooperstown Andre.
