The Rose Bowl was rocking and the weather was a perfect 70 degrees at kick off. Alabama won the coin toss and elected to receive. The first series of downs was dominated by the Long Horns Defense. Alabama attempted a fake punt and the pass was intercepted by the Long horns.
With Texas driving Colt McCoy is knocked out of the game with just under 11 min of the 1st quarter. Garrett Gilbert takes over. Alabama forces the Longhorns to kick a field goal after a goal line stand. Texas is up 3 - 0. Colt McCoy is taken to the locker room to look at his shoulder. He would not return.
Texas kicked an onside kick and recovers it. They drive down and are able to kick another field goal making it 6-0.
The Tide is driving towards the end of the first quarter via the legs of Mark Ingram and cap off a 7 play drive with their first touch down of the game. 7 - 6 Alabama leads.
The Texas defense continues to play well and get their 4th sac at 10:35 of the 2nd quarter as McElroy fails to get rid of the ball yet again. Still unable to produce on offense Alabama finds themselves with the ball and at 7:59 in the 2nd quarter Trent Richardson runs 49 yards for the score. 14 - 6 Crimson Tide.
Garrett Gilbert continues to have a rough night and when Texas is forced to punt the field goal goes a short 34 yards. Working with a short field Bama drives down but on 4th and 1 is forced to kick a field goal. 17 - 6 Tide.
A shuttle pass by Gilbert is intercepted by Marcell Dareus who takes it to the end zone for the score just before half time. 24 - 6.
The 3rd quarter was dominated by defense as both teams stuggled to find life on offense until a 44 yard touchdown pass to Jordan Shipley with 1:31 to go. 24 - 13 Alabama still leading.
In a hybrid on side kick attempt which was kicked on a straight line hitting a would be Alabama returner it bounces off and Texas recovers. They proceed to go 3 n out sending the ball back to Alabama.
Gilbert starts to get comfortable and seems to have established some chemistry with WR Shipley. He caps off a 9 play 65 yard drive with a touch down to who else but Shipley. After the 2 point conversion Texas trails by only three points. 24 - 21.
The Alabama defense steps up big hitting the rookie quarterback forcing a fumble which is recovered on the 3 yard line. Heisman trophy winner Mark Ingram rushes in for the touch down. Alabama up 31-21 with 2:01 to play.
Gilbert threw his 3rd interception of the game which Alabama turned into another touch down. Final score 37-21.
Texas put up a valiant effort after losing quarterback Colt McCoy. In the end the loss of McCoy was to much to over come and the Crimson Tide rolled to their 13th National Title.
