Carroll leaves an empire

Pete Carroll built an empire at USC. From 2001 to 2009 Carroll’s Trojans won two national titles and finished with a 97-17 record. If Pete’s record wasn’t impressive enough how about coaching 3 quarterbacks who went on to win the Heisman Trophy? Still not impressed? How about sending 35 players to the NFL in that span?

After reading all the above information I’m sure you agree that Pete Carroll was a good coach at USC. Does that qualify him to coach in the NFL again? For those that don’t know before taking the job at USC, Carroll was a coach in the NFL. His overall record in the NFL as a Head Coach is 33-31. Not a great record and certainly not anywhere near the level of achievement at the collegiate level. So why the NFL again?

I think theres a number of reasons that drove Pete to make this move. Investigations into players as recent as this years Joe McNight and Reggie Bush before him are part of it. Also on the list is that he didn’t really have anything else to accomplish at USC. Perhaps its his legacy as a coach or quest for personal glory in the pros?

We have several reasons for Carroll to take the job but how about Seattle wanting Carroll? Why did they get rid of Jim Mora Jr.? After getting fired as Head Coach of the Falcons in 2006 Mora was hired as an Assistant Head Coach in Seattle. He was the Heir Apparent when Holmgren retired, which came at the end of the 2008 season. Now only one season in Mora is fired? Do they think the issue with the Seahawks was coaching related?

I would say Seattle’s issues are related to personnel and not coaching. Coaching professional athletes vs college players is much tougher. Good luck to you Pete in your new venture.
