The 2009 - 2010 NBA season ended with Kobe and the Lakers winning their second consecutive NBA title, defeating the Boston Celtics, but NBA talks were far from over. It was now time to focus on where this great class of free agents would call home next season. LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Dirk Nowitzki, Carlos Boozer, Joe Johnson and Amare Stoudamire top the 2010 free agent list.
Dirk signed early and chose to remain in Dallas, Joe Johnson also signed early and stayed with Atlanta, Boozer said his goodbyes to Utah in favor of Chicago. These signings gave little insight into the potential future of LeBron. Having grown up in Akron and played his entire NBA career in Cleveland would that mean he stays home? After all if he left how could he ever sell his 20,000sf house?! How could he tell the fans who adore him so much or the city that he built he was moving on?
June 8Th came with an announcement from Miami that Wade was staying put and Bosh was joining him. We now know that was enough to lure James and his quest for an NBA title. Having Pat Riley and Dwayne Wade, both of who have achieved NBA’s greatest honor sure didn’t hurt.
Cleveland fans are going to be upset by his decision but the manor in which he made it has to be commended. Many people thought that James was just being a narcissist and attempting to draw attention to himself with the drawn out process. Yes having an hour special featured on ESPN is a bit much but giving away the proceeds to charity? That’s both clever and generous! Good for you LeBron.
Not so fast on awarding Miami the NBA title either, the dust has yet to settle on the remaining pieces of the Heat’s roster. There’s also a few teams that may have a say in the East before its all said and done.
